I love the 4th of July! It is a great holiday to just sit around with the Fam, chill and of course EAT! The lake is the perfect place to do all of this. My cousin, Cori, and her family came up to spend the day with us. Everyone had a lot of fun. Chace and Dylan took turns trying to stay up on the waterskis. Then they moved on to the one person tube. Todd was making it his mission to throw them off. Dylan learned a hard lesson while flying by the dock on one of his rounds – tie your swim trunks tighter!! Cori and I were just walking down to the dock when he was riding and all of a sudden, all we see is a bright white hiney streaking by! I haven’t laughed that hard in quite some time. His swim trunks were stripped off and then he couldn’t let go because his hand was stuck in the handles of the tube. It was a priceless Kodak moment, too bad we hadn’t gotten down there 10 minutes sooner. I probably would have had the video camera going, and that would definitely be YouTube worthy! Dakota and Lael rode the 4-Ball tube, Lael loving every second of it. Dakota was more like Caeden, not exactly thrilled. Madyson spent all of her time in the water with Chris. She didn’t want to get out for anything!! Cori and I got on the 4-Ball too. Todd slung her off one time and I didn’t even realize that she was gone. Fun times!

We are going to continue the fun we had in Chattanooga at the lake for a week. Todd is off on Monday for the July 4th holiday, so he will stay til then, then he will have to go back to Huntsville without us. We will stay at the lake, hang out and enjoy! Today we mostly just sat on the dock, taking turns riding the tubes and waterskiing. When it got dark we settled in on the dock to watch the fireworks show from across the lake at Cedar Bluff. It was awesome! I thought we would be able to hear them much more clearly though, but Dad said that it was farther than it looked. I tried to get pictures of the fireworks, like I do every year. But, I failed again, like I do every year! I did get a great shot of the Fam though!

Last day in Chattanooga – We had planned on going to the Children’s Museum. But, Todd thought that he would be finished by 10:30, so I decided we would not have enough time to dedicate to the museum. Lael was not happy, but I promised her that would be tops on our list the next time we come. We try to do different things when we come – and there is plenty to do in Chattanooga! So, we left early and had breakfast at Chattanooga Cupcakes. YUM! This is the cutest little bakery. They have all kinds of cupcakes. Lael chose her favorite, Red Velvet and Caeden chose his favorite, chocolate. It was not nearly as easy for me! I finally decided on a Key Lime cupcake that was TDF! There was a little squirt of yummy creamy delicious Key Lime flavor pudding stuff in the middle of it and and on the top. I had forgotten how much I love Key Lime pie! I think Caeden was more impressed with his IBF root beer than his cupcake! They were so huge that even Lael had a hard time eating all of hers.

After we left there, we went in search of a bookstore, Lael wanted to spend the last of her money on books. We went into one that was a disaster! It was like a flea market type of bookstore full of old dusty books. Lael was impressed with a Nancy Drew that I swear must have been from one of the first printings in the 50′s!! She had already read it though. So, we left and went a little farther and found another book store. This store only had about 20 kids books though, and nothing Lael was terribly interested in. Then they found the candy/toy aisle. This is where it got interesting as Lael tried to add up how much all the stuff she wanted cost and how much money she had left. Trying to get Caeden to pick something out was like pulling teeth though! He was not overly impressed with anything, but finally picked out a packet of silly bands. When we got back on the sidewalk outside the bookstore, I noticed the sign that had Lael’s name all over it.

We got back to the hotel and Todd was already there. So, we packed up our stuff, said goodby to Chattanooga and headed back to Huntsville! Next time I will pay more attention though and will NOT miss my turn for Highway 72!

The twins were up pretty late last night because I had promised them that they could swim in the pool, so they were doing that at 9:30! That meant they didn’t get into the bed until about 11:00. Combine a late night with a super dark hotel room and they slept til nearly 10:00! That is a major first! It doesn’t matter what time they go to bed at home, they always get up insanely early! Anyway, we had planned on going to the zoo today. The shuttle doesn’t go to the zoo, so we got the car from valet parking (which the twins thought was the weirdest thing! They could not understand why we had to pay someone to park our car, and certainly couldn’t fathom why we couldn’t go get it ourselves!) We headed out to the zoo and pulled into the parking lot where I realized that I forgot my camera! Ummmm, no way can I go to the zoo without a camera. So we turned around and went right back to the hotel. They didn’t complain {m.u.c.h.} At the zoo, we had to buy tickets right in the gift store, so Lael starts trying to pick out a souvenir. We always give the kids $10 each to buy a souvenir when we go on trips. Not a lot of money to be sure, but enough to get something cool usually! Lael is a spender, her money just burns a hole in her pocket until every red cent has been spent! I convince her to wait until we leave so that she doesn’t have to carry around the stuffed animal in the park. I am certain that is what she would pick out! We get into the zoo, and lo and behold there is a carousel! Keep in mind they just rode one yesterday! Do they insist on riding this one as well? Of course! The zoo in Chattanooga is not huge by any means, we made the complete circuit in about 1.5 hours. But, it was cheap and a great way to spend ½ a day.

We head back to the hotel to park the car and set out to find some lunch. I was itching for Mexican, and I had seen a Qdoba yesterday as we were coming home from the North Shore. Lael complained that she doesn’t really like Mexican food, but she is the one who ended up cleaning her plate! My burrito was the size of Texas, and after eating most of it my tummy felt like it was holding all of the burritos from Texas. Ugggh! But, it was delicious! Did I mention that I love Mexican?!? When Todd got back to the hotel, we headed out find somewhere to eat dinner, my burrito was still weighing pretty heavy in my belly. But, I am a glutton for punishment. We went to the River City Brewing Co. It looked like the wait was going to be interminable, but we told them we were willing to sit outside and were seated within 5 minutes. Hooray!

Todd had a week long business trip to Chattanooga this week. He always stays at the Read House in Chattanooga when he goes, which is owned by Sheraton. It has a long history and is a very beautiful old hotel. Luckily this trip was on a week when we didn’t have anything else going on, so the twins and I joined him in Chattanooga on Tuesday night. We had made plans to go the Children’s Museum and the Zoo, so Chace had no interest in doing any of that. He opted to spend a couple of days at Dylan’s house.

We arrived in Chattanooga earlier than I thought. It is not nearly as far as I thought it was. We got into the hotel and up to our room with the appropriate ooo’s and ahhhh’s from Caeden and Lael. There is just something magical about a hotel, especially for kids!!

After we got all of our things into the room and settled Bailey in – we took the shuttle up to the North Shore and into Coolidge Park. I had read on the internet that this was a great, free place to spend an afternoon. It was true! The twins loved it all! We started off with a ride on the carousel. Lael had a very hard time choosing which animal to ride on – I think she climbed up on over half of them that were available! Finally, the carousel started and their faces lit up just like it was the first time they had ever ridden a carousel, instead of like the 300th!

After the ride was over they spotted the water fountains. It was pretty crowded with kids already, but definitely enough water for two more!! It was really hot and some of the kids were wearing swimsuits. I was thinking I probably should have had them put on swimsuits under their clothes, but they just went in clothes and all. I seriously considered joining them at one point, but instead busied myself taking pictures.

I don’t think they would have ever gotten tired of the fountains! I finally pulled them away to explore the rest of the park, but they were not thrilled about it! We walked a bit until we found these cool ‘found metal’ music instruments. These were donated by several Chattanooga companies and installed in the park. Apparently, they used to have rubber mallets to bang with (make music!) but they have gone missing, so the twins just swung the chains to clang, bang, and make a general uproar that they called music. Here is a video of the music instruments and some obligatory posed shots!

We walked on into the park a bit and found this slide type thing that led directly down to the shore of the river. I didn’t know what in the world it was for……..I racked my brain and couldn’t come up with anything. It was made of a heavy duty plastic and had a groove in the middle. Finally I noticed a little sign that said something about canoe/kayak launch. Ah-Ha! Lightbulb moment! The twins liked their first thought of a slide and proceeded to try out that idea. If Todd had been there, he probably would have nixed this idea, those who know him well know why! {safety issues} Lo and behold, he would have been right – check out this video of Caeden sliding down and [almost] taking a tumble that would probably have prompted an ER visit with multiple broken limbs, lost teeth, and missing skin.

A little farther in the park, we found this hopscotch thing that looked like it could provide either fun or frustration, or a little bit of both! The instructions said that you threw a rock and had to skip over the spot that it landed on and that you couldn’t touch any lines. It starts off easy but as you moved through the spiral, it gets quite difficult because the spots get so small. Yes I tried it!

More walking through the park and we spot this humongous hill with a bunch of kids flying down. It looked like it should have been covered with snow, that was how fast they were sliding down. When we got closer we realized that they were sliding on cardboard. There was one piece of cardboard lying at the bottom of the hill, so Lael grabbed it and she and Caeden set off for the top of the hill. I parked myself near the bottom with camera in hand to capture the fun on film and video. When they got to the top, somebody gave Caeden a piece of cardboard also, so they both came flying down the hill. It was awesome. Caeden tried sliding down on his bottom, on his belly, on his knees, he did it all. Lael mostly slid on her knees. I don’t know why the huge hill was made, but it’s perfect for cardboard sliding!

It was getting close to the time when Todd said that he should be on his way home, so we made our way back out to where the shuttle stop was. We were also dying of thirst, so we ran into Walgreens for a drink. We made it back to the shuttle stop and waited and waited and waited. The shuttles in town run every 5 minutes, but not quite so often on the North Shore. So, I called Todd and he said that he was about 10 minutes away. I was trying to tell him where we were – and finally he said oh yeah, I see Walgreens. Just as soon as he pulled into the parking lot, the shuttle came. Of course!

The Tigers were in the championship game against the Yankees. They lost. It was painful for the boys because they felt like they could have beat them in this game and certainly when they played them in the regular season. Chace had a good game, you can see by amount of dirt on his uniform! It was a long game, they played a full 9 innings, I think – when they usually only play 7 or 8. After the game, they gave out the medals for 1st and 2nd place in the regular season and 1st and 2nd place for the championship. Chace and his teammates do not look particulary happy. I also snapped a picture of Lael playing in the dirt, along with Caeden who came up to see what she up to.

a Detroit Tiger, that is! Never, ever will he cheer for the blue/orange Tiger team, which will go unnamed here on my blog!!! He is playing in the Senior League in the Madison Baseball rec league again. He didn’t play last year after getting totally burned out on baseball at Liberty. At Liberty, the coaches were so intense and just ON the boys butts all the time that Chace didn’t really enjoy it. It is totally different in the park league. These boys are playing baseball just for the fun of the game. It is relaxed and easygoing and just plain fun. Chace is enjoying it so much, and that translates into him being a better ball player. He is hitting the ball better than he ever did at Liberty. He hit one over the fence the other day and the joy on his face as he crossed home plate with all his teammates there to smack him on the back (or butt) was so apparent. He is playing shortshop and will go completely horizontal in the air to keep a ball from getting by him. He also pitches some, they call him the Closer. His coach will usually put him at the end of the game. I think he only started pitching one game. After one inning pitching, the coach asked him if that was a knuckle ball he threw. Chace said yes it was. His coach seemed to be impressed with that pitch in particular. I don’t even know what a knuckle ball is! Anyway, it has been fun to go to the games – Caeden especially enjoys watching these much older boys play!

Today was their last game in the regular season, so we got some team shots afterward.
